Specialized Agency - United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space
Committee Synopsis: The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) was set up in the 1950s, under a unique political and scientific atmosphere, where nations raced to the stars in an attempt to solidify their dominance in the world above. Since then, mankind has visited the moon, built an innumerable number of rockets, and spent billions on upgrading space technology to levels beyond what the founders of COPUOS could have anticipated. However, the issues COPUOS faced before remain. A looming space arms race has sent nations into a frenzy over who can militarize space first, with many nations founding dedicated "space forces" for the purpose. However, in this frenzy, multiple nations remain left behind, as fears of a "space monopoly", owned by only a few of the most wealthy and powerful countries, have become an ever increasing reality. Delegates in this committee must work together to find solutions to the unique issues that plague the heavens above, or the sky will truly become the limit for many across the planet.
