Specialized Agency - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
Committee Synopsis: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) seeks to increase global peace and safety through their efforts to combat and eliminate corruption, crime and terrorism. Unfortunately, fighting against these issues brings together a plethora of complex consequences and results. Even since the capture and arrest of Joaquín Gúzman Loera, alias El Chapo, in 2014, the Sinaloa Cartel has continued to reach record profits and product smuggled into the United States while the conflict between the various cartels and the government has only become worse. While groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda have lost some of their strength in the Middle East, they have found a new foothold in Africa, especially in countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso and Mozambique. Finally, corruption on all levels continues to plague many of the world’s states from the highest political offices down to the smallest local municipalities. These issues are interconnected; to tackle one, this committee must find a way to create effective resolutions and methods of implementation for all.
