Position Paper Guide

A Position Paper is a document that details a country’s position on the committee topics, including proposed solutions. Formatting guidelines and tips are listed below. Please bring a hard copy of your position paper to submit to the chair during Committee Session I.

Here are three pretty good reasons to write one:

  • Demonstrate to the chairs that you’ve researched the topics and turned that information into a strong, country-specific case.
  • Required for award eligibility for delegates in our DISEC, ASEAN, and UNODC committees.
  • Have a personalized resource to reference during debate.
  • When writing yours, focus on three main sections:

    1. Introduction to the Topic

    • history and overview of the topic,
    • past international actions or relevant international agreements and their successes/failings,
    • why is it important for the international community to address this issue?

    2. Position of Your Country

    • how does this issue relate to and impact your country?
    • what previous relevant actions/legislations has your country taken or enacted? what has or has not worked?
    3. Proposal of Solutions
    • provide appropriate solutions based on your position and try to be as specific as possible
Since all our committees have two topics, repeat this for each!

Here are RAMMUNC's position paper formatting requirements:
    • 12 pt. font (Times New Roman preferred) with 1-inch margins
    • Cover page that includes: official country name, country flag, committee name, your name(s), your school, the conference name, and the topics.
    • MLA works cited page
    • At least one page per topic
